To me it is clear that the main reason that Putin attacked Ukraine was the encroachment of NATO on his borders, fueled by the US. That is true, but it is also true that the possibility of nuclear weapons being put near his border might (I suppose) probably permit a first strike, perhaps without time for retaliation. As I understand, the alleged biolabs were also near the border. Whether any of this is actually true is not my point. My point is that even the thought of a first and final nuclear strike, if believed, demonstrates the willingness to act in a situation where Putin’s efforts to prevent this from happening were continually quashed. There are even many voices, including Ukraine’s, crying out for a no-fly zone… an interesting request for national as well as planetary suicide
Nuclear weapons completely distort rationale policy regarding the possible use of conventional warfare, which I am also against- but, perhaps, although not in my own view of real, more philosophically humane, defensive warfare- conventional war is better than destroying the whole planet.
Since Putin is still in the framework of focusing on any and all types of warfare, which includes the Mutually Assured Destruction scenario, I believe he was trying to get ahead of the curve before his whole country was blown to ashes.
I’d rather call MAD (Mutually Insured Destruction)- MIA (Mutually Insured Insanity).
